At the age of 117 years, 3 months, and 16 days, Sarah W. Kairns (-1855) is the oldest of Green-Wood’s more than 500,000 permanent residents. She was buried on this date in 1855, two months after her death. Much of Kairns’ headstone is lost to time. Two sheep with the words “hope” and “faith” remain, however five oil lamps—one for Kairns and each of her four sisters buried here—no longer exist. In addition to having the distinction of being the oldest person to be interred at Green-Wood, Kairns was also a mother 22 times over! Our research team uncovered documentation noting that Ms. Kairns “gave birth to twenty-two children and retained her sprightliness to the last.” #historicgreenwood #greenwoodcemetery

It’s more common than you might think, actually. Architects whose designs are celebrated widely for their style and flourish choose modest, unassuming funerary monuments for themselves. Jacob Wrey Mould, celebrated for such notable designs as Central Park’s Belvedere Castle (pictured 3), the intricately carved decorations and mosaics embellishing Bethesda Terrace (pictured 1), and the elegant Bow Bridge (pictured 2) is one such architect. Anna Mackay, née Case (1888-1984) was a celebrate

Anna Mackay, née Case (1888-1984) was a celebrated opera soprano—the only American singer without European training who had been accepted by the @metopera, according to the New York Times. On January 7, 1984, at the age of 95, she died at Manhattan’s Stanhope Hotel. She is interred at Green-Wood in the mausoleum commissioned by the family of her husband, Clarence H. Mackay, a music patron and one of the wealthiest men in America. #DidYouKnow: The roof of the Mackay Mausoleum (Lot 29275, Sec. 125), at 26.5 feet square and 14 inches thick, accounts for the largest piece of stone ever quarried in the United States (mind blown!). 📸 Gardens of Stone blog #historicgreenwood #greenwoodcemetery
